What is it like to get a dental crown?

Is your smile in a world of pain because of your damaged tooth? Do you have tooth damage that’s too extensive for a dental filling? You are only two appointments away from a healthy, beautiful smile. During the initial appointment, Dr. Far, Gang Wang and the team use digital x-rays to assess your tooth to determine your eligibility for a dental cap.
If you are a suitable candidate for a dental crown, it’s time to prepare your tooth. Here, we start by numbing your mouth to minimize discomfort during treatment. Next, we shave down your tooth to make space for a crown. If your tooth is severely damaged, we can rebuild its structure to support a crown.
After tooth preparation, we take the bite impressions of the prepped tooth and the surrounding teeth. We share these models with our lab technicians, who custom-make your dental crown to fit and look natural. Since manufacturing your crown may take about a week, we protect your prepared tooth with a temporary dental crown.
In your second appointment, we remove the temporary crown and clean and sanitize your tooth before trying your new crown. We usually make a few adjustments to your crown before installing it permanently on your tooth using dental cement.

Dental Crown FAQs
Can a dental crown be replaced if I don’t like how it looks?
Dental crowns can be replaced if they do not meet your expectations regarding color, shape, or size. However, replacing a crown requires additional time and cost, so it’s best to communicate your preferences clearly with your dentist before the final crown is placed. Temporary crowns allow you to preview the look and feel and request adjustments before the permanent one is cemented.
How does a dental crown affect my gum health?
A well-fitted crown should not irritate your gums, but if it is too bulky or placed incorrectly, it can cause inflammation or make cleaning more difficult. Over time, plaque buildup around the edges of a crown can lead to gum disease if proper oral hygiene is not maintained. Regular dental cleanings and floss or interdental brushes can help prevent gum issues.
Will my crowned tooth be sensitive to hot and cold?
It is common to experience some sensitivity to temperature changes after getting a crown, especially if a large portion of the natural tooth was removed during preparation. This sensitivity typically subsides within a few weeks as your tooth and surrounding tissues adjust. If the sensitivity persists beyond that, it could indicate that the crown needs adjustment or that the underlying tooth is experiencing nerve irritation.
Can a dental crown stain or discolor over time?
Porcelain and ceramic crowns are designed to resist staining, but they are not completely immune. While they do not absorb pigments like natural enamel, consuming dark-colored foods and beverages like coffee, red wine, or berries can cause gradual discoloration. Unlike natural teeth, crowns do not respond to whitening treatments, so maintaining good oral hygiene and limiting stain-causing foods can help preserve their brightness.
How long do crowns typically last, and what affects their lifespan?
The average lifespan of a dental crown is ten to fifteen years, but with excellent care, some crowns can last even longer. Factors affecting their longevity include the material used, oral hygiene habits, teeth grinding, and diet. Avoiding hard or sticky foods, wearing a nightguard if you grind your teeth, and maintaining regular dental check-ups can help extend the life of your crown.
Can a crowned tooth still get cavities?
While the crown cannot decay, the natural tooth structure underneath it is still vulnerable to cavities. Bacteria can accumulate at the margin where the crown meets the natural tooth, leading to decay beneath the crown. Brushing twice daily, flossing carefully around the crown, and using fluoride treatments can help protect your tooth from cavities.
Is there a risk of an allergic reaction to my dental crown?
Although rare, some patients can have allergic reactions to the metals used in certain crowns, particularly those containing nickel. If you have known metal allergies, inform your dentist beforehand so they can recommend a hypoallergenic material like all-ceramic or zirconia crowns.
