Stay on Top of Your Dental Health with Routine Dental Exams and Check-ups
Preventive dental care is the most cost-effective way to keep your teeth and gums in top shape. Preventive dentistry involves two parts — at-home oral hygiene and routine dental exams with a trusted dental practice. Brushing and flossing your teeth at home is great, but oral care is never complete without regular dental check-ups. Our dental team detects and treats dental problems that may have passed your notice during regular dental exams.
Due for a dental exam in Kanata, Ontario? It’s never too late to put your dental health back on track. Please schedule an appointment with The Hope Dental Care Centre for tailor-made dental check-ups.
What to expect during a dental exam
Want to up your dental health game? Dentists recommend that you should see a dentist and/or hygienist at least twice a year. However, the frequency should be higher if you are at an increased risk of cavities and gum disease.
What happens during a dental exam? A typical dental check-up shouldn’t last more than 1-2 hours. During a dental check-up, we scrutinize your mouth to detect and treat dental problems before they advance. A standard dental exam involves the following:
- Visual examination: Your dentist can see a lot by examining your mouth with an intra-oral camera. They can spot cavities, signs of gum disease, tooth decay, and failing dental work through a preliminary examination.
- Digital x-rays: Your dentist can only see much by just looking at your mouth. We use safe dental x-rays to detect problems lurking beneath your gum line. With the help of digital radiographs, your dentist can detect bone loss, hidden cavities, cysts, tooth infections, impacted wisdom teeth, and other abnormalities not visible to the naked eye.
- Oral cancer screening: Our dental team scrutinizes your gums, lips, tongue, neck, and throat to look out for abnormal lumps, patches, and sores that may indicate the presence of mouth cancer. We recommend a biopsy if we spot abnormal signs.
- Dental cleaning: Our team proceeds with a dental cleaning or oral prophylaxis if we don’t see significant problems in your smile. The primary goal of professional cleaning is to remove plaque and tartar accumulated on your teeth. After removing calculus build-up, we polish your teeth for a shiny look.
