Sometimes, the wisest decision regarding wisdom teeth is to have them removed – especially if they’re impacted! These third molars aren’t needed for biting and chewing. They’re just an extra set of teeth that may or may not show up in your early adult years. If there isn’t sufficient space for them to emerge – often the case – they can become stuck in your gums or impacted and cause painful symptoms. If you’re experiencing wisdom tooth pain, there’s no need to fear. Simply contact Dr. Alireza Farkhondeh (Dr. Far) from The Hope Dental Care Centre in Kanata, Ontario, to schedule impacted wisdom teeth removal treatment.
Impacted wisdom teeth removal can help resolve problems with these molars and eliminate painful symptoms. First, Dr. Far will evaluate your condition to confirm whether wisdom teeth are the cause of your symptoms. We will visually inspect your mouth and take digital x-rays to better understand what is happening beneath the gum surface. X-rays will reveal if these teeth are hidden in your gums and their current state, helping us decide how to treat them appropriately.
Some common symptoms of impacted wisdom teeth are:
Pain is one of the first symptoms you’ll feel with impacted wisdom teeth – a dull, throbbing pain coming from the back of your mouth. The pain can radiate through your jaw and face, causing severe headaches. You may also feel more intense pain when you chew.
Impacted wisdom teeth can cause gum pain, tenderness, and swelling in the area where the teeth are located. Your gums may appear red or bleed when you brush your teeth.
Impacted wisdom teeth can become a breeding ground for harmful bacteria as they get trapped in the folds of your gums and teeth in the back of your mouth. This can lead to bacterial infection, cysts, or cavities. Over time, you may develop terrible bad breath or experience a foul taste in your mouth due to the infection.
You may have trouble opening your mouth wide due to pain and discomfort in your jaw caused by your impacted teeth.
Removing your impacted wisdom teeth will eliminate your symptoms and restore your oral health. Dr. Far will numb your mouth for painless extraction treatment. Next, we will make a small incision in the gum where the teeth are located. We will remove any bone tissue obstructing the site and remove the tooth/teeth. Following the extraction, we will stitch your gum to aid in the healing process. This process can be done under sedation to make you more comfortable during the procedure.
We’ll provide full instructions on caring for the extraction site to expedite your recovery and prevent problems with dry sockets. With rest, a soft diet, and proper oral care, you should feel new within a week or so.
